After the earliest breakup on record, the smelts are spawning their way into the Bethel area.

Tuesday morning, Napakiak resident Michael Black posted a picture on Facebook of the smelts he caught near Napakiak. He was still smelting when he talked with KYUK.

“Yeah, they’re hitting pretty hard. I’m getting like half a net-full each time. Well, most of the time I’m getting half a net-full,” Black said.

Alaska State Troopers arrested 38-year-old Akiachak resident Harry Nose last week on multiple felony assault charges.

Troopers say on Thursday Tribal Police Officers in Akiachak requested their assistance regarding an assault. Police say Nose assaulted his female guardian at their residence where he was released under a court order after serving out a prior conviction.

The Bethel Wrestling Club participated in the 2016 Alaska USA State Wrestling Tournament in Wasilla over the weekend. Three Warriors came home with a triple-crown title after coming out first in all three wrestling styles: folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game forecasts a higher 2016 king salmon run than previous years. If the run goes as expected, officials say it might be enough for escapement and subsistence harvest needs. Wildlife managers met with fishery representatives from along the Kuskokwim River to discuss season management.

As the Kuskokwim river ice continues to shift and rot, Search and Rescue volunteers have suspended recovery efforts for the remains of 26-year-old Tuluksak resident Dillon Lamont.

Bethel Search and Rescue Chief Mike Riley says recovery efforts for Lamont just below Tuluksak have been suspended sue to deteriorating river conditions at the search site.

“They have kinda suspended their search for Mr. Lamont maybe a week or so until conditions get better. They have pulled their equipment from there because of safety reasons, getting there. The biggest factor there, the safety part for the searchers,” Riley said.

Alaska State Troopers say 32-year-old Bethel resident Kenlynn Nicholai was arrested in Bethel after allegedly stealing and selling antlers.

Wildlife Troopers in Bethel say they received a call from a Bethel resident on Wednesday around 4pm, saying someone had stolen a pair of caribou antlers from their back deck earlier that day.

Search and Rescue volunteers are attempting to recover the remains of 26-year-old Tuluksak resident, Dillon Lamont.

Troopers say they received a report on the 10th that three people had broken through the Kuskokwim River ice near Tuluksak. A witness assisted two of the passengers but Lamont did not make it out. It is presumed by responders that he had drowned.

Troopers say they received a report on Sunday that three people had broken through the Kuskokwim River ice near Tuluksak. A witness assisted two of the passengers but the third, the male from Tuluksak, did not make it out.
