After the earliest breakup on record, the smelts are spawning their way into the Bethel area.

Tuesday morning, Napakiak resident Michael Black posted a picture on Facebook of the smelts he caught near Napakiak. He was still smelting when he talked with KYUK.

“Yeah, they’re hitting pretty hard. I’m getting like half a net-full each time. Well, most of the time I’m getting half a net-full,” Black said.

The Bethel Wrestling Club participated in the 2016 Alaska USA State Wrestling Tournament in Wasilla over the weekend. Three Warriors came home with a triple-crown title after coming out first in all three wrestling styles: folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle.

Bethel Police are searching for an escaped inmate who’s fled the Tundra Center Corrections Facility.

50-year-old David Hames of Bethel escaped the facility yesterday with 28-year-old Thaddues Johnson, also from Bethel.

Consumers around the Kuskokwim communities who rely on GCI, or General Communication Inc. cellular services are saying the service has been spotty over the winter months. Bethel resident Shantell Kinegak lists some of the problems she’s noticed on her cell service.

“The cell service just going out for a while and then throughout the day, my messages aren’t being sent and my phone call are getting cut off,” said Kinegak.

Bethel middle school wrestlers came away from the Tanana Invitational Wrestling Tournament with another state championship. It’s the fourth small school championship in a row for the Bethel team and they did it setting several team records.

Bethel Search and Rescue is warning the public about holes opening up on the Kuskokwim River during this warm spell, and they’re especially concerned about an area where holes are opening on an established trail.

The volunteer organization says two people traveling on the Kuskokwim by truck upriver fell into an open hole earlier this week but they got out safely.

Searchers say on Tuesday the pair was traveling from Kalskag heading downriver and took a shortcut above Macivik Slough by Tuluksak where they fell into an open hole.

Bethel police arrested 44-year-old Frank Chanar of Bethel for kidnapping and multiple assault charges.

According to a press release, the Bethel Police Department received a call on Monday that a female had been assaulted and required medics. Police investigated and released the woman to be treated at the local emergency room.
