The Kuskokwim 300 Sled Dog Race Committee has once again raised its purse, maintaining the race’s money pot as the second highest in the state for sled dog racing behind the Iditarod.

Eleven Mushers from across the Kuskokwim have signed up to compete in the Akiak Dash. The Dash is the shortest race out of three throughout Kuskokwim 300 weekend, but at $15,000 it boasts a big sprint race purse.

Twenty-five mushers, some local, some international–but all prepared to race this evening along icy river trails—are in Bethel for the Kuskokwim 300. The race starts tonight at 6:30 p.m. It’s the longest of three races that’ll take place over the weekend.

Musher Kristin Bacon won the humanitarian award for excellent dog care during the Kuskokwim 300. The race presented the award during the banquet Monday night. She ran a team of mostly Jeff King’s dogs in her first Kuskokwim 300.

Rookie of the year went to Raelyn Shover, who ran one of three teams from Lance Mackey’s kennel. She finished in 16th place.

2015 Kuskokwim 300 winner Pete Kaiser of Bethel, the first local musher to win in 29 years, received a standing ovation. He thanked family, friends, and the entire YK Delta region for years of support.

Johnnie Qaluvialler Evan of Tuntutuliak won the Akiak Dash in Bethel Saturday evening.  Evan topped thirteen other  teams competing in the region’s premier sprint race by maintaining a steady lead for the duration of the 65-mile course that runs from Bethel to Akiak and back .

25 mushers are set to race from Bethel to Aniak and back in the 36th running of the Kuskokwim 300. After a couple winter warmups, and little snow, this year’s trail follows the truck road on the river almost exclusively to Aniak and back, cutting out the loop near Whitefish Lake.
