Alaska State Troopers arrested 38-year-old Akiachak resident Harry Nose last week on multiple felony assault charges.

Troopers say on Thursday Tribal Police Officers in Akiachak requested their assistance regarding an assault. Police say Nose assaulted his female guardian at their residence where he was released under a court order after serving out a prior conviction.

Search and Rescue volunteers located the remains of 63-year-old Evon Wassilie of Akiachak on Sunday. He was traveling home by snowmachine at the time of his death.

On New Year’s Day, a 19-year-old Akiachak man allegedly set his uncle’s house on fire, while his uncle was sleeping. He’s been charged with two counts of arson and one count of criminal mischief.

Alaska State Troopers were notified of a possible assault in the village of Akiachak, yesterday.

Troopers conducted an investigation and identified 42-year-old Andrew Kawagley as a suspect.

Yupiit Nation tribal members at an event Friday made a last second push for advancing sovereignty in Alaska. A few dozen people at a Yupiit Nation event in Bethel sent a late Friday afternoon letter to Governor Walker asking him to stop the state’s fight against putting lands into trust.

Governor Bill Walker faces an August deadline for determining the future of the state’s appeal against a court case that could clear a path for Alaska tribes to put land into trust.

He’s facing pressure from tribes to drop the lawsuit. Trust status would reshape tribal sovereignty on certain lands. Walker said Monday that the purpose of his recent five-village trip was to listen and build relationships with tribes. Read more →

Governor Bill Walker was in Akiachak and Tuluskak Tuesday to discuss a lawsuit involving tribal lands into trust, according to officials in Akiachak. Walker’s office kept his first visit to southwest Alaska since his election low profile amid high interest in a case that could reshape jurisdiction on Alaska Native lands.
