Quinhagak searchers have rescued a missing person from their village with little time to spare.

According to the Alaska State Troopers online dispatch, Bethel based troopers received a call Wednesday around noon saying 21-year-old Michael Matthew of Quinhagak had walked away from his residence. He was not carrying warm weather gear.

At 10 p.m. that evening, a search party observed flashes from a cigarette lighter along a beach a few miles from the village. A half an hour later, searchers located Matthew on the other side of a river, but they were separated by the tide and open water.

Searchers navigated the water and reached Matthew. They found him hypothermic and transported him to the Quinhagak clinic.
