Bethel’s tribe, the Orutsararmiut Native Council, appointed Gene Peltola Sr. as their new Executive Director. He accepted a two-year contract beginning on September 1st. He says the first thing he needs to do is learn as much as he can in his new leadership role.

“I’ve gotta educate myself, and then I’m going to have to roll up my sleeves and become a team leader, and work towards improving the services that we are obligated to provide to the membership,” said Peltola.

Peltola is coming out of a brief retirement to take the position.  He brings with him almost 25 years of experience as CEO for the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation, and previous experience serving as President and CEO for the Association of Village Council Presidents.

The Orutsararmiut Native Council is based in Bethel, Alaska. It’s the largest tribe in the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta, serving over 3,000 members.

Former ONC Executive Director Zach Brink says his contract with ONC was originally set to run until the end of the month, but he left so that Peltola could assume the position. He declined any further comment.
