Manutoli Wins Inaugural Western Alaska Championship Sled Dog Race

George Manutoli of Akiachak has taken first in the Bethel Sprint Club’s inaugural Western Alaska Championship sled dog race with an elapsed time of two hours, 31 minutes, and 56 seconds. Joe Demantle finished less than a minute after Manutoli at 2 hours, 32 minutes, and 12 seconds. Jim George placed third at 2 hours, 37 minutes and two seconds.

The 20-mile race occurred Friday and Saturday, starting at H-Marker Lake and traveling west on the tundra trail. The race held an 8-dog limit and a $12,500 purse paid out to the top 12 finishers. Manutoli earned $3,000, Demantle $2,500, and George $2,000.
