Brent Sass has placed second in the Kuskokwim 300. Joar Lieseth Ulsom claims third.

This is Sass’ second year competing. Last year he won Rookie of the Year.

“Everyone always told me [the K300] it’s unpredictable and you got all of these different conditions,” Sass said, “but I thoroughly enjoyed it out there.”

Sass told KYUK at the finish line that he decided in No Man’s Land to pass competitor Ulsom of Norway.

Sass is from Eureka and is the reigning Yukon Quest champion. He plans on competing in the Quest again a few weeks and in the Iditarod later this season.

Although Sass’ lead dog died just a few days before the start of the race, he said his dogs were able to handle the competition.

Ulsom dashed across the finish line to claim third place. Although Ulsom is a man of few words he told KYUK that the race was “Awesome” and “icy.”

Ulsom has also competed in the Iditarod, where he placed fourth during his first race.

Richie Diehl of Aniak came in fourth shortly after Ulsom.
