Wrestlers from across the state competed in the Bethel Wrestling Invitational over the weekend. 278 wrestlers from 22 teams participated in this year’s bracketed-individual and team-scoring tournament at Bethel Regional High School.

BRHS performed well in front of their hometown crowd, winning the team-scoring title and crowning several individual champions and medal-winners alike.

Thomas Dyment of BRHS took first at 98lbs with a pin 39-seconds into the final period over silver medalist Odin Andersen of Palmer H.S.

BRHS took the top three podium positions at 106lbs, with Jarius Allain claiming first, Mathew Hunter second and Avery Hoffman third.

At 113lbs BRHS’s Tristen Evan earned gold with a 9-0 major decision over senior Matt DeBilt of Quinhagak. BRHS also claimed third place at 113lbs, courtesy of Adrian Smith’s 10-7 decision over Craig Hunter of Scammon Bay High School.

120lbs was another of the evening’s many BRHS vs. BRHS match-ups in the finals, with Seth Smith winning in a closely wrestled 3-1 decision over teammate Leon Evon. Jessie Nicholas of Kwethluk claimed third place with a 9-3 decision win over Rhett Jackson of Kuskokwim Learning Academy.

The 126lbs weight-class had both a boys and girls bracket. Gage Hoffman of Bethel not only brought home the gold medal at boys’ 126lbs but also claimed the “Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament” award. Hoffman won his gold with a 5-3 decision over Brandon Evans of KLA. The third-place medal went back to Scammon Bay with Kobe Rivers after his 12-8 defeat of Paul Hunter of BRHS.

The 126lbs girls bracket featured two BRHS Warriors in the final, with Amber Wade of Bethel claiming the gold with a second-period pin over Cassandra David. The third-place match ended in a pin at the 2:48 mark, with Kenni Ulak of Scammon Bay winning over Cheryl Nick of Pilot Station.

Another BRHS vs. BRHS final was hashed out at 132lbs, and it was a great championship match with Carl Charlie winning with a last second takedown over teammate Aaron Olsen to take the 5-4 lead and the gold medal. Harvey Nick of Kwethluk took third with a 6-5 decision over Shayne Afcan of BRHS.

At 138lbs Jason Watkins of Palmer High School defeated Mian Alexie-Leonard of BRHS by a final score of 7-3. Palmer also brought home the third and fourth place positions via Asa Barnes who defeated teammate Julian Davis in the third-place match.

138lbs held the second of two girls-only brackets. Kelley O’Brien of BRHS claimed the gold medal by pinning teammate Elishah Naneng in 1-minute and 18-seconds. Third position went to Mardena Matthew-John of KLA with her pin over Sabrina Rivers of Scammon Bay with just 3 seconds left in the second period.

145lbs had one of the wildest and most exciting semifinal match-ups, ending with Haley O’Brien victorious in double-overtime over Mason Martins of Chevak. Martins went on to take third with a 2:25 pin over Garner Ulok of KLA. O’Brien earned silver after losing in a 12-3 major decision at the hands of Palmer’s Levi Farris.

The 152lbs championship final was another BRHS vs. BRHS match. Alex Larson defeated teammate Mathew Ferguson 5-1. Third place at 152lbs went to Hunter Bleakney of Palmer with his 8-1 win over Carl Nicolai of Quinhagak.

The 160lbs final was the first of three featuring intra-squad match-ups for the Palmer High School Moose. Christian Kurka pinned teammate Bryan Deyer in 1-minute 43-seconds. Third-place at 160bs went to Geoff Wiseman of Chefornak due to a forfeit by Trevor Amukon of Scammon Bay.

182lbs featured another closely contested finals match between Zion Rogers of Palmer and Jayvin Williams of BRHS. Rogers’ match-strategy proved to be the winning strategy, as he held off an attacking Williams in the 3rd period to hold onto a narrow 6-5 lead. Drew Pekar of Bethel took 3rd place with a 34-second pin against Garrett Kairaiuak of Chefornak.

220lbs was the second of three Moose vs. Moose finals with Austin Farris winning in a 15-2 major decision over Travis Wheeler. Palmer would also claim third at 220lbs with Ryker Carrington pinning Aniak’s Andrew Wilson 20-seconds into the third period.

285lbs was the only weight-class wrestled in a round-robin fashion, with the gold awarded to Austin Kollander of Palmer after his win over teammate Keith Andersen in what was essentially the championship match with a fall at 5:25. Nathaniel Bagongon of Emmonak took third with a 2:51 pin over Jeremy Chung of Bethel.
