A lawsuit has been filed against the Yupiit School District, four Akiachak school supervisors and an Alaska State Trooper official for allegedly showing “deliberate indifference” when a former school teacher was sexually assaulted and continuously harassed during her nearly three years teaching there.

The lawsuit, which was filed late last month, claims the entities exercised gross negligence, caused emotional distress, retaliation, and violated Title IX among other charges. Read more →

Two Alakanuk men have been arrested on six felony charges of sexual assault, kidnapping and sexual abuse of a minor.

A new National Guard unit has been established in Bethel days after the Director of the National Guard visited the community and a nearby village last week.

It was the third time national leaders visited the community in the past half-year but the first time in recent that the Director of the National Guard, Timothy Kadavy, was among them.

After further investigation Alaska State Troopers discovered that 23-year-old Pilot Station resident Nicole Polty also assisted in the Pilot Station jailbreak earlier this month. A warrant has been issued for her arrest.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the lead agency that produced the EIS will host the meetings.

This is Sass’ second year competing. Last year he won Rookie of the Year.

The Kuksokwim 300 mushers are in the final stretch of the Kuskokwim 300 sled dog race. Facing various injuries, and on icy trails, mushers have passed the Tuluksak checkpoint and are racing toward the finish line in Bethel.

KYUK’s Anna Rose MacArthur interviewed the mushers before they took off for the final 50-mile stretch.

Greg Larson, 43, of Nabaskiak has won the Akiak Dash, racing across the finish line at 8:24 Saturday evening. The Dash is the shortest of three race during the Kuskokwim 300. Larson last won the Dash in 2004, and is the cousin of Jackie Larson. Jackie won the Bogus Creek 150 earlier today.

Veteran musher and Kuskokwim 300 rookie Brenda Mackey has scratched from the race due a cornea abrasion. Many mushers passing through the Kalskag checkpoint told KYUK this year’s trail was proving harsh with icy terrain and high winds. Read more →

After over 30 years of mushing, John George and his team took second in the Bogus Creek 150, crossing the line at 11:29 a.m. He’s a race veteran, taking first in the Bogus in 2002 and first in the Akiak Dash in 2010. This year he finished almost an hour after this year’s champion, Napaskiak’s Jackie Larson.
