Art auction to feature variety of ravens and salmon

ravensVariety is the spice of life and so too will it be this weekend with the Salmon and Raven auction in Bethel. Every year, the Bethel Art Guild puts on the auction as a way to raise money for art scholarships. In the past, the salmon and ravens were decorated flat pieces of cut-out steel, all the same size. This Saturday night, the event will be a little different.

Reyne Athanas is the co-founder of the art guild and one of the organizers of the event.

“This is the very first year that we will be having different sizes and different mediums for the salmon,” Athanas says. “We have five smaller wood salmon that we’ve given out to artists and we’ve gotten three of them back. They look great. They’re lighter, easier to hang on your wall. We also this year have at least three ceramic ones that are also smaller and they are outrageously beautiful.”

The live auction will be held Saturday night at 7 p.m. at the cultural center. There will also be a silent auction happening around the perimeter of the room.

It’s the organization’s largest fund raiser of the year bringing in thousands of dollars. Individual pieces tend to generate a range of profits, anywhere from $50 to $1,000. The guild uses the money for scholarships for college students as well as students attending summer art camps.

Athanas says that not only is there a variety of sizes and mediums this year, the quality is different as well.

“We have this year gotten more unique, more varied, more outstanding pieces than I have seen in a long time,” Athanas says. “I mean it’s amazing. Folks should definitely come by and take a preview over here in the hallway.”

The salmon and ravens can be seen prior to the event at the cultural center.

The event includes a catered dinner by Tiffany Tony which starts at 6 p.m. Tickets for that are $50 per person or $95 for two. They can be purchased in advance or at the door if there are any left.

The auction starts at 7 p.m. for those not attending the dinner.
