basketballThe 2016 Greater Kuskokwim Conference Championships, a 1A classification tournament, took place on March 4th & 5th in Aniak.

Two total berths exist coming out of this tournament for the state tournament- one for the girls champion and one for the boys champion.

In the girls championship match-up on Saturday evening Aniak, the home team, faced off against Akiak. The Lady Halfbreeds trailed for a majority of the second half but were able to send a shooter to the free-throw line after time had already expired in the fourth quarter. Aniak’s Pearl Morgan stepped to the line with her team trailing by just one point, 52 to 51. Morgan missed her first free-throw, but made the second, tying the game and sending it into overtime. In overtime Aniak would take the lead and keep it, finishing with a 58-53 victory, while also securing their ticket to the 2016 State Basketball Tournament.

The boys final was made up of Akiachak and Aniak. Aniak trailed at the end of each quarter, and the Huskies of Akiachak cruised to a 73-64 victory, guaranteeing their spot in the State Tournament. The 1A state tournament will take place March 16-19th in Anchorage.
