It’s that time of year when Pomp and Circumstance and mortarboard caps fill the air, a time of teenage passage. And for most students at Bethel Regional High School, it’s a time of saying goodbye to friends who’ve been together with since kindergarten and preparing for a future apart. So before receiving their diplomas, the 48 Bethel graduates gathered backstage one last time. KYUK’s Anna Rose MacArthur was there and has this story.

Kuskokwim villages say they’re feeling the effects of Bethel’s new liquor store. The shop opened last week in the Kuskokwim’s hub after decades of banned sales.

Pizza is a rare treat in Goodnews Bay. No pizzerias or even restaurants exist in the 250-person community in southwest Alaska. So Wednesday morning when 22 fresh pizzas arrived at the school, it was a big deal. But the even bigger deal was the national winner inside the building.

What does rural healthcare in Alaska have to do with jobs? A lot, according to The Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation. The regional healthcare provider is opposing the Donlin Gold mine. And a big part of an anti-Donlin resolution the corporation passed last month focuses on the potential for jobs to leave the region if the mine is developed.

Myron Naneng has resigned as president and CEO of the Association of Village Council Presidents. Naneng announced his decision at an Executive Board meeting Wednesday. The resignation became effective immediately, according to a press release from the regional tribal nonprofit. Read more →
