Bethel PoliceIn a little over a year, the Bethel Police Department has had two high profile cases of police misconduct–one involving police brutality and the other an attempted rape.

The department is still working to improve its hiring practices, and its unclear if either of these men still have their police certification.

On Wednesday morning Bethel Search and Rescue conducted an aerial survey of the Kuskokwim River from Napaskiak to Tuluksak, and reported there are approximately 50 holes in that 50-mile stretch of the river following recent days of warm and rainy weather.

The Lower Kuskokwim Fish and Game Advisory Committee unanimously opposed three proposals which call for various types of permits for managing the Kuskokwim Chinook fishery.

The three proposals, known as 95, 97 and the newly introduced proposal 222, will still be taken up by the State’s Fish Board this January, and if they don’t accept the Advisory Committee’s recommendation there could be changes for subsistence fishers on the Kuskokwim.

Yup’ik print materials have survived the Kilbuck fire. That’s the good news from the first look inside the burn site.

Donning blue rubber gloves, a handful of Lower Kuskokwim School District staff entered the Kilbuck premises on Tuesday for the first time since a fire destroyed much of the campus earlier this month. Read more →

After two months of debating and amending, Bethel has new alcohol laws on the books. The change comes less than a week after legal sales came to town in the form of two liquor licenses. Read more →

The Kuskokwim River Salmon Management Working Group will meet tomorrow at 9 a.m. to discuss proposals for the Yukon, Kuskokwim and Arctic salmon fisheries.

Among the scheduled proposals under discussion, are proposals 95, 97, and 222. These proposals all ask to implement some sort of subsistence fishing permit system for the Kuskokwim salmon fishery.

Troopers say a 39 year-old Lower Kalskag man was shot in the abdomen just before midnight on Friday, leading to a first degree attempted murder charge for 23 year-old Raven Levi from the same village.

Troopers and a VPSO responded along with a medevac team, and after investigating, found that Levi had shot the man with a .44 magnum revolver.

Money and school supplies have flooded into Bethel from across the United States, following the destruction of two schools in the Kilbuck fire earlier this month.

Monetary donations exceed $67,000, as of Friday, with over a third of that coming from Rasmuson Foundation pledges. Read more →

Bethel Search and Rescue measured ice thickness on the Kuskokwim around Bethel on Sunday. They say the riverfront around Bethel from Crowley to Brown’s Slough averaged 10 inches.

Downriver, search and rescue says there appears to be a well-traveled trail from Bethel to Oscarville and Napaskiak, along the Oscarville Slough. The ice averaged around 8 inches along the route.
