There are  six candidates vying for four seats on the Bethel City Council.  KYUK gave listeners the opportunity to hear from all the candidates on the issues most important to voters before they hit the voting booth on October 6th.

Representatives from local media outlets- Anna Rose MacArthur & Charles Enoch of KYUK News, and Kelly Lincoln from the Delta Discovery newspaper- asked a variety of questions to the candidates, and responses were held to a strict time limit.

Permitting for the proposed Donlin Gold mine, which will affect communities along the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta is underway. An official draft of the statement examining the mine’s affects on the environment will be available at the end of November.

Municipal elections are coming up in Bethel, and in addition to electing City Council members, voters will cast their ballot on a series of propositions and questions pertaining to alcohol and marijuana sales.

Bethel city employees could soon be protected from sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination.

In its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Bethel City Council agreed to draft language to include sexual orientation and gender identity under the city’s protected classes. Read more →
