The boys and girls varsity basketball teams from Bethel Regional High School wrapped up their tournament action on Saturday evening against the Nanooks of Nome.

The Lady Warriors were first up on the court, and they jumped out to a dominating first half lead of 20 to 5. The Lady Nanooks would claw their way back into the game and would close that gap to 6 points at one point in the third quarter. The Lady Warriors would eventually stretch the lead back out and would finish with a 38-22 victory.

Bethel Police are investigating the death of a woman they say suffered a fatal gunshot wound. 25-year-old Roseanne Pitka of Toksook Bay was found dead early Friday at a residence in Bethel’s Larson Subdivision. Police report that she died from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. They received a call at about 4:50 a.m.

Police say the incident is suspicious and they are not ruling out anything, including homicide or a self-inflicted wound. At the time this story was filed they were still interviewing witnesses. Police believe alcohol was a factor.

A Bethel, Alaska suicide prevention organization, recently released a public service announcement featuring local Alaska Native mushing celebrities. The message puts a local spin on the issue in an area with some of the country’s highest suicide rates.

The next K300-sponsored sled dog race is slated for Saturday February 14th. Teams in this year’s February 50 will compete for a $10,000 purse. The actual trail will be set in the coming days.

The mass start near the Bethel boat harbor is at 11 a.m. and there will be an eight-dog limit.

Both the boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball squads from Bethel Regional High School won in their opening games of the 2015 Donlin Gold Tournament on Thursday night at BRHS. Both teams played against the Wolfpack of Unalakleet, a familiar 1A opponent, and both teams cruised to quality victories.
