Y-K Delta State Senator Lyman Hoffman surprised some people when he endorsed Republican Dan Sullivan for US Senate. In an interview Friday, Hoffman explained why he took a stance in the high profile race in which Sullivan is seeking Senator Mark Begich’s job.

Hoffman quickly brings Sullivan’s help in settling a lawsuit against the state, the Kasayulie case, which addressed inequality in school construction spending in rural Alaska.

Senator Mark Begich made another appearance on KYUK’s most popular call-in show Friday morning to share his wife’s travel plans for the YK Delta and answer some questions posed by the Talk Line hosts. The conversation heats up with many opinions regarding gay marriage, and with the midterms just around the corner everyone has something to say about the upcoming election. Two investigators from the state Fire Marshal’s office completed their work at the site of the fire that destroyed the new Bethel alcohol treatment center. Lloyd Nakano is an assistant state fire marshall.

“The on scene has been completed, however, more followups with interviews may be possible,” said Nakano.

Bethel’s long-awaited new pool will host a grand opening Saturday. Raunicka Ray, the facility director, says staff have been making final adjustments after a soft opening last Saturday.

“We’ve had people inside the pool, inside the fitness center, getting all the staff trained and ready for this upcoming Saturday. We expect a big crowd, starting at two and going all the way up until 9 o’clock,” said Ray.

The money from the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development program will go to Quinhagak, Shageluk, Nunapitchuk, Buckland, and Akiachak for planning or building water and sewer projects.
